Press Statement

DECEMBER 5, 2000 - EWING, NJ… The College of New Jersey is being forced to consider opposition to its newly proposed program, a children’s golf tournament sponsored by Nike. The meeting to discuss memoranda included Lisa Meyers, an alumna of the school, former newspaper reporter, and current Media Relations manager at TCNJ. Some believed Nike’s work to improve shops worldwide is legitimate, while others still felt alternative funding was a better idea.

The newest opposition came from within the school. Janet Gray, professor of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, Jill Fink, the director of the Women in Learning and Leadership Program, and Noelle Petruzelli and Ramon Suarez, students and members of Amnesty International also entered the discussion meeting on December 1. The women protested the program because they felt it would be a "Public Relations nightmare," on account of widespread student opposition.

The school still plans to carry out the proposed program, funded by Nike. While the claims of these individuals are respected, it is too soon for the board to tell whether opposition on campus will truly be a nightmare, as the women suggested. The arguments of each individual are being taken into full consideration for the final decision.

The tournament is scheduled for this summer, beginning on alumni weekend and lasting about one week. Students will use facilities on campus and will be bussed to the local Mountain Range Golf Course. Local professional golfers will be instructing the students, along with a special appearance by Tiger Woods. The college hopes this program will increase children’s interest in the College Bound program as well.
