I couldn't resist the temptation of writing about this subject and rehashing it on the message board...so let me say one thing. I am an ethnic minority, and I will take every thing I can get. I don't care why they give it to me as long as I know that I am able to fufill my part of the bargain. Affirmative action is nothing new and therefore I do not think that it is the cause of continued racism in American society. I would rather argue that it is the strongly instilled and pervasive fixation with race that has turned affirmative action into a "minority vs. white thing". This is very attuned to the entire O.J Simpson fiasco and how an issue that was really about the ceaseless abuse of women by their former lovers or husbands into another "black vs. white thing". Do not get me wrong...I am not saying that Americans do not have reason to be fixated upon issues involving race...god knows we wll never escape this bottomless quagmire. It simply urks me when idiots like George W. Bush are accepted into schools like Yale University on the basis of being born into money and noone says anthing! Hell, we elect people like that to our highest executive office! But the moment when a black kid from a shitty neighborhood gets a chance to prove himself...all hell breaks loose and the Republicans charge the cavalry! You all wanna blame racism on something...look at yourselves...not at some misguided yet well-intentioned program whose real purpose has been distorted by the conservative media in the past twenty years! And another thing...what Prof. Pearson said was true! Why is that whenever a group of white people talk about race and gender...affirmative action is always the first thing on their lips?! I mean hell! Whether or not affirmative action survives or not isn't going do a damn thing for race relations in this country. Even if you illiminate all of the "handouts" we minorities are always getting...LOL... the problem still won't be fixed for us...beacuse then we are going to have to deal with the same shitty schools and shitty jobs that many whites have today in America. Instaed of looking to eliminate affirmative action you whites should be asking why is it that y'all aren't getting the same thing...Who says that everyone doesn't deserve a free education or an opportunity to go to college if they want to try? Univesral college education for all! It'll cost less than that bullshit Star Wars program that Bush wants! Thank You. I hope I wasn't ranting.
