A new magazine stepping out in style

By Rashod D. Ollison INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

In the 1920s and '30s, the Savoy was a magnet for the stylish black crowd. It was a grand ballroom up in Harlem where couples lindy-hopped to live jazz, laughed out loud, and fell in love.

That joint is a dusty old memory. Today, Savoy is the name of a magazine whose target audience is affluent African Americans, the kind of people who frequented the fabled nightspot.

"We gathered there to not only dance but celebrate our achievements," says the magazine's editor-in-chief, Roy Johnson, 44. http://inq.philly.com/content/inquirer/2001/01/25/magazine/SAVOY25.htm
