Women Are Sportswriters Too: The Fractured Relationship Between Reporters and Athletes

Since the beginning of organized sports, there have been sports reporters. These reporters were charged with the task of "criticizing and analyzing the performance of athletes." (Craig 1994, 527.) Originally the criticism was limited to an athleteÕs work and performance on the field, protecting the athleteÕs private life from the public. For example, when Babe Ruth skipped games to get treatment for venereal disease, the press reported he had a "bellyache." The press, therefore, served as a shield between the athletes and the fans. http://www.stwing.upenn.edu/~jahavsy1/reporters.html
