I'd like to switch the focus for a second off of race and switch it to a matter of gender discrimination. Let me start by saying that I am not a female therefore I really will never know what really happens in the life of a female sports reporter, but I can comment on my feelings about females in my occupation.

In the most recent Signal, Josee Rose wrote a commentary in the sports section about how men think she is inferior to them in terms of sports knowledge because she is a woman and that male coaches have said things to her that would make her feel stupid.

Now all of this could be true, and I know that feelings of female inferiority still exist in some areas. But as a male sports journalist, I don't see anything wrong with female sports reporters or feel any sense that I "know" more about sports just because I am a guy.

Let me say this again so that I am crystal clear: I am not a female, and those things all might have happened, but I refuse to believe that ANY coach -- high school college little league whoever -- would ever say to a female sports reporter "Do you know what football is?" especially in a day and age where it is the opposite of the "PC" thing to do. I am not belittling this situation at all, and Josee is very good at what she does. But being in the field I don't think that issue is as serious (at this college or non-pro level of journalism)as people might make it out to be.
