Faculty Member and Students Speak Out Against Sweat Shops December 5, 2000- Ewing, NJ…Assistant Professor Janet Gray of the Women’s and Gender Studies Department and two students interrupted a Journalism class, Intro. To Professional Writing, in Bliss Hall room 234 on Friday, December 1, to speak out against Nike and sweat shop labor. The class, which is lead by Professor Kim Pearson, has been discussing the recent offer made to The College of New Jersey to host this summer’s Trenton Youth Golf Tournament and camp. Nike will be sponsoring the event. Professor Gray and the two female students said that they represented numerous on campus interest groups, including the Student Government Association, who feel strongly that the college should not host the event due to Nike’s heavy and much publicized reliance on sweat shop labor. They said that the college should still host the event but should seek sponsorship from other organizations, not Nike. They suggested that the college research web sites such as Hollywood Against Sweat Shops to find alternative sponsors. |
