College Relations Planners Hear Anti-Sweatshop Activists Address
DECEMBER 1, 2000 - EWING, NJ…College Relations planners were subjected to an address from a group of anti-sweatshop activists when their meeting to discuss a potential event was interrupted. Three activists, Professor, Janet Gray, student Noelle Petruzelli, and Jill Fink, Director of the TCNJ Women in Learning and Leadership Program, entered the meeting and asked to be heard. They proceeded to urge the group not to allow TCNJ participation in the Jr. Golf Program with Nike as a corporate sponsor. Also, an alternative media journalist sat in and observed the discussion. As this mini-protest occurred at the College Relations Planning meeting, another larger group sought the attention of College Relations Associate VP, Jesse Rosenblum. This group explained its position which included selling an alternative image" through the creation of a replacement program to benefit the community. Such program would allow corporate sponsorship from Nike or Tiger Woods. It was explained that SAS has gained support from several groups. Other potential supporters were mentioned. The availability of these groups and the accuracy of these suggestions are not yet confirmed. The activists proclaimed that if TCNJ administrators take on this event, it will be a "public relations nightmare" for The College. A committee will be formed to investigate all claims made by the activists. Their views will be considered thoroughly before the College makes any decisions regarding the Jr. Golf Program and Tournament. Additionally, investigation will include research of Nike business practices and Tiger Woods’ involvement in the matter.
