Sweatshop Discussion Interrupted
December 1, 2000- Ewing, NJ A public relations meeting being led by Professor Kim Pearson was interrupted, and the people involved refused to leave. Janet Gray of the Women’s Studies Department led the group of three trying to convince those who attended the meeting not to let a Nike sponsored Junior Golf Tournament come to The College of New Jersey. The two-week camp, planned for this summer, may feature a brief appearance by golf star, Tiger Woods. Woods has been the subject of controversy, refusing to cross picket lines in Thailand, as workers there demand increased wages from Nike. Woods recently signed a five-year, $100 million dollar endorsement contract with Nike. The purpose of the event is to have the children involved in a positive event, run by a college. It aims to convince them to enroll in college, in the future. Pearson questioned a man who was sitting in the back of the room. She found out he was a writer from the web-site indymedia.org. He was obviously biased against Nike. When Gray called him her group’s hero, he replied that her group was his. Most members of the public relations group were for the event coming to the school, saying the event was beneficial for the kids involved. Some disagreed, saying it was unethical to use a group that is being accused of running sweatshops to sponsor a charity event.
