Faculty and students interrupt meeting foreshadowing ant-sweat protest

DECEMBER 1, 2000 – Ewing, NJ… Prof. Janet Gray of TCNJ's Women and Gender Studies Program, Noelle Petruzelli, a student and Jill Fink, Director of the TCNJ Women in Learning and Leadership Program interrupted a public relations meeting on Friday. The interruption was intended to persuade the public relations committee not to go ahead with the golf tournament co-sponsored by TCNJ and Nike. The women claimed that Nike’s involvement with sweatshops would bring about campus protests and be damaging to the college’s reputation.

The women offered various other companies and organizations that they felt were an alternative to Nike’s co-sponsorship. Fink said, "We hold ourselves to a higher standard. The anti-sweat movement is the moment for the college to shine. We must do what’s best for the college and the sweat workers."

The committee is split. Some said that Nike has done and adequate job in providing for its workers. Others said that that Nike's claims were not believable, and found the prospect of an alliance ethically troubling.

The committee is expected to submit a recommendation to Jesse Rosenbaum, director of college relations, later this week
