My Sabbatical Journal: Spring, 2003This semester, I am on sabbatical from TCNJ while I work on a number of important projects, and prepare myself to teach in our new Interactive Multimedia Major, which was approved by the Board of Trustees in December, 2002. The major is in the process of final approvals by the State Department of Education. The first courses in the new major are already being offered. Meanwhile, you can keep up with what I'm doing by way of this page. "A Voice That Bears A Likeness to My Soul" So there's a theatrical director in me -- who knew? It was a privilege, and an eye-opening experience to sit in the director's booth as Monique Hankerson presented her poetry, music and photography to an enthusiastic audience at the Black Box Theater in Kendall Hall at TCNJ on April 9. It was particularly validating to have people ask us about taking her show on tour. Will that happen? Who knows? Stay tuned. ASALH Black History Month KitI contributed two essays, production assistance and research to The Souls of Black Folk: Centennial Reflections, a multimedia collection of essays, music, audio and curricular resources. The kit includes a CD ROM with traditional and original period music by TCNJ students, and actual audio excerpts of W.E.B. Du Bois' reflections on his life. The kit, which is distributed nationally, is available from ASALH. ASALH, the world's oldest learned society devoted to the study of African American Life and History, is the originator of Black History Month. You can learn more about the kit here. Interactive Computing ClassWhile I'm on sabbatical, I'm taking a class with Dr. Ursula Wolz, Introduction to Interactive Computing. My work for the class is on a website that you can see here. Bayard RustinMy first sabbatical project was an article on the life of Bayard Rustin, the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. A documentary about Rustin's life, "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin" premiered on PBS in Martin Luther King Day, and will doubtless be repeated over the next several weeks. You can learn more about the film from the producers' website. My article on Rustin is posted |
